Movie Reviews

Namaste and welcome to my blog. If you've read my past blogs you will have deduced that I am a huge movie fan. I'm a big cinephile of films old and new. This blog today, however, is about movies I've seen in the theater and at home on video recently.

KONG: Skull Island
I have to be honest and say that this movie actually exceeded my expectations, especially compared to the last one with Jack Black. A star studded cast with the likes of John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston, among others. The latter two both also having roles in the MCU as Nick Fury and Loki, respectively. The cinematography was great and it really felt like you were there on the island. It also set up nicely for future monster films. There is a rumor online that Kong ties in with the recently revamped  Godzilla and we may see a Kong vs. Godzilla movie on the horizon.

The Magnificent Seven
This Western set action thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington, and Chris Pratt, among others excited a film genre that kinda has its hits and misses. M7 joins hits like Unforgiven and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in western fame. If you like lots of action and high body counts, then this is the film for you.

Idiocracy
I reference this movie a lot due to the current nature of our political decorum being so similar to that of this movie. It's not the newest movie on the shelf, but it's a cult classic with lots of humor from Luke Wilson and Terry Crews. The unlikely hero finds himself roped into a failed military experiment at human hybernation. When Joe wakes up in the future, he is "Not Sure" where he is and soon finds out that he is the smartest person on a planet full of idiots that are failing at the basics in life. Joe ultimately saves the day and brings a new dawn to America.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil
If you like comedy and you like horror, then this movie might just be right up your alley. I decided to test the waters after seeing it on my Netflix options. I was rewarded with a hilarious comedy about misconceptions, misunderstandings, and serious misfortunes. Sometimes trying to do the right thing can be PAINFULLY funny, pardon the pun.

Logan
There can be a lot of things said about Hugh Jackman and his repeated portrayal of Wolverine, a.k.a. Logan. This dystopian future shows Logan aging and hurting due to poisoning from his Adamantium skeleton. The age of the mutants are all gone. Charles Xavier is doped up and we never really are able to find out for sure what he did. Something terrible, no doubt. A few big plot holes like that one and a few moments that were upsetting to say the least. All in all, it was action packed, emotional, and dark, but it was the version of Wolverine that the fans deserved, coming off of the success of the R-rated Deadpool. It is a shame that this is the last time we will see Hugh Jackman play this role. The young woman they got to play X-23 was pretty bad ass though, so who knows...
Jackman did say he would reprise the role just ONE MORE TIME, IF... he got to do a Wolverine/Avengers crossover...
Let's knock on wood and keep our fingers crossed on that one

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
So, I wrote a lot about this movie before its release and I gotta say that it really outdid itself and not only lived up to, but surpassed the hype. This movie had a very organic feel to it. The heroes felt established and the story flowed masterfully. We discovered the meaning of past events and we as viewers could feel the characters come together as a family. The movie ended with 5 separate post credit scenes, the most important being the prelude to the introduction of Adam Warlock, keeper of the Soul Infinity Stone. We also got to see more of Howard the Duck and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar. This movie is slightly darker than the original, but never lacking in humor or action. Looking forward to seeing our heroes in GotG Vol. 3 and Avengers: Infinity War.

Beauty and the Beast
What can I say? I'm a dude... of course I was skeptical. It's Disney, though, so they really spared no expense making the live action movie true to life with the animated original. Emma Watson shined as Belle surrounded by an extraordinary cast of Lee Evans, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGreggor, Kevin Kline, Josh Gadd, Ian McKellan, and so many more. If you loved the original then you will certainly love this family classic that is sure to be as timeless as its predecessor.

Wreck It Ralph
Again, not a new film, but I watched it again recently and felt like adding it to this list. Another Disney classic that sets out the bad guy Ralph, who just yearns to be accepted by his fellow gaming NPC's (non-playable characters) who are busy partying in the penthouse eating cake. Ralph decides to "go Turbo" and game jump in order to earn a medal to impress the citizens of Fix It Felix, Jr. Wreck it Ralph is definitely an all-ages friendly movie that is sure to please the entire family. Disney has already confirmed that there will indeed be a sequel that I believe is coming out next year in 2018. Keep posted on that one.

xXx: the Return of Xander Cage
This movie was about what you would expect it to be. Extreme sports. Over the top stunts, explosions, and action. Of course we saw the return of Vin Diesel as the role of the main character Triple X in addition to the return of Ice Cube as Darius Stone and adding in the martial arts phenom Donnie Yen made the movie that much more epic. Definitely worth a watch. The story isn't really tied in much to the other films, so it can stand alone without having to worry about storyline credibility.

Well folks, that about ties this one up for me. This has been the one and only Quiet Mouse, your source for political, social, and entertainment commentary.
