Plastic Prohibition

Namaste, my friends, family, and fellow knowledge seekers. Welcome to my blog, the Quiet Mouse Strikes Back. Thank you for taking the time from your busy day to read my thoughts.

My subject of discourse today is the infamy known as plastic, in particular the plastic that is created from petroleum and is filling up landfills, lakes, rivers, and our oceans with toxic garbage that can't break down into organic components for decay.

As a student of history I can clearly see that prohibition of things doesn't work. At all. It didn't work for alcohol. It hasn't worked for illegal drugs. It certainly isn't going to work trying to ban plastic, i.e. plastic bags, bottles, cutlery, straws, sauce packets, etc.

If prohibition has taught us anything it is that:
1) people don't seem to care about breaking laws they deem to be unimportant or trivial.
2) when there is demand, there will always be a supply; an underground market will emerge.
3) Banning things is completely unnecessary when there are viable environmentally conscious alternatives.

The alternatives to petroleum-based plastics (that NEVER degrade, except into smaller micro-plastic pieces that get eaten by animals) are plant-based biodegradable products made from natural materials that CAN break down in a landfill. There are companies out there making these products, but they do not have enough of them or enough investors to fund the continual research and development needed to make the complete transition away from the toxic petroleum-based plastics that are killing the environment. Let's do our part as concerned citizens and environmentally conscious eaters and DEMAND a biodegradable alternative that will not kill our animal cohabitants and furry friends, nor fish or whale, crustaceans, nor snails. Having our planet be clean and livable for all IS a HUMAN RIGHT that we need to enforce by holding our elected officials and representatives accountable to "We the people...".
