Marvel VS. DC: Battle For the Comics Movie Universe

Welcome friends, family, and fellow knowledge seekers to another exciting posting for the Quiet Mouse Strikes Back.

There are many different varying opinions about who likes which comic universe better. I, like many others, am obviously biased toward Marvel as this discourse will plainly show. Others, like my brother and best buddy are supremely more into the DC comic universe. This isn't just a blog to throw mud at the rivals. I have 10 strong bulletin points to prove my argument as to why I personally believe that Marvel will not only win the comic movie wars, but will outclass and out-dominate their counterparts in DC.

1) Marvel characters, primarily the heroes are mostly humans with human emotions and problems and thus are easier for fans to relate to than other-worldly characters in DC like Superman.

2) Locations in the MCU are real places, like the primary use of New York City as a base for many superheroes such as Spider-man, Fantastic 4, and the Avengers.
DC's Gotham City and Metropolis are fictional places that are difficult for fans to identify with.

3) The Avengers are a better team than the Justice League, hands down. The Avengers team dynamic allows them to combat evil threats fairly spontaneously, whereas the Justice League always has to assemble, plan, and organize together, but the only time the battle is quick in the DC universe is if the heroes are fighting solo, which has been their bread and butter so far. For this reason I don't believe the film adaptation of the DC characters in JLA will be as fluid as the chemistry of the Avengers.

4) Marvel has a LOT of on screen characters (too many to list here, see attached pics). DC cannot seem to break away from their 2 main characters on the big screen: Batman and Superman.

5) Marvel is bringing out a larger comic universe by bringing in characters like Ant Man, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Deadpool, and Guardians of the Galaxy. DC has Aquaman (who just can't be taken seriously), Cyborg, and Flash that have little story build-up.

6) Marvel is more known for it's dynamic HEROES like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Wolverine and the X-men, etc. DC is more known for its VILLAINS like Doomsday, Joker, Bane, Lex Luther, General Zod, and an anti-Justice League.

7) MCU, with support of Disney has become a HUGE financial success with the Iron Man, Captain America, Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, among others. In addition, FOX and SONY Marvel Movies (with the exception of the new Fantastic 4 reboot) like Wolverine, X-men, Deadpool, and Spider-Man have been big box office draws that DC cannot compete with.

8) There has been MORE HYPE given to the 2016 May release of Captain America: Civil War than to its DC rival Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Sadly, I think BOTH were overshadowed by the kick-ass, profane, and vulgar Deadpool.

9) MCU is more friendly toward female viewers because of the romance story of Deadpool and the hero characters like Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow, Wanda Maximof a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, Hope Van Dyne a.k.a. the Wasp, and Carol Danvers a.k.a. Ms. Marvel or Captain Marvel. DC pretty much is just a sausage fest and  only has one female lead in Wonder Woman.

10) DC movies have thus-far lacked a cohesive story line, universe, or arc of any kind. Marvel, by contrast, has created an EPIC and MASSIVE comic universe based around the arc of Thanos and the quest for the Infinity Gauntlet and six infinity stones (space, time, mind, reality, power, and soul). Marvel is currently 10 movies deep into this arc.

I've obviously played my cards and have sided with the MCU on this one. Even further I am siding with team Captain America in the Marvel Civil War which compared to DC is loaded with a star studded cast of super-hero bad asses. So let's go ahead and lay it out who's siding with whom over the issue of the mass registration of persons with superpowers.

On a side subject, the reason I am siding with Cap is because I like Captain America and what he stands for and his willingness to fight for what he believes in even if that gets him beat up or unpopular. Like Cap, I too am a military veteran. I've seen firsthand what government intervention has done throughout history and it primarily centers around taking away the rights of others, which always starts with the BEST INTENTIONS as freedom is sacrificed for a false sense of security. I agree with the sentiment of a soldier; that even in a crazy world of violence and danger, it is MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER to preserve basic freedoms for EVERYONE, even at the cost of the occasional war against all enemies foreign and domestic. Freedom isn't free. Maybe I'm an idealist. Off my soapbox and moving on...

On the other side of the coin is team Iron Man/Tony Stark who is always looking for the "nuclear deterrent", acting as a personal morality policeman based upon his thoughts about what is (questionably) in the best interest of others ever since the Battle of New York vs. Loki and the Chitauri that left him a little neurotic, as we saw in Iron Man 3. He's a "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist" who is quite capable of backing up his agenda and is a formidable foe. He is joined in his quest for world peace (despite his failure in the Ultron initiative) by:
Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff
Vision
War Machine/James Rhodes
Black Panther/T'Challa

As if this movie wasn't bad ass looking enough, then we bring in further characters like Thadeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (from Edward Norton's HULK), Crossbones (who kills Captain America in the comics), nemesis Baron Zemo, and a cameo from your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

I realize it should have been just called Avengers 3 since all the characters are there, but I think there is some sentimentality in the MCU for Captain America/Steve Rogers and thus made the movie centered around his struggle in ideologies vs. his friend in arms Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. Again, this whole process of the Civil War taking place is going to be the catalyst for the expansion of the MCU as the Avengers cross over with the Guardians of the Galaxy and Earth's mightiest heroes will face off against the Mad Titan THANOS, who, as we saw at the end of Age of Ultron, now possesses one of the two Infinity Gauntlets. I'm very eager to see this whole story play out.

I hate to keep bringing it up, but since the reboot of the Fantastic 4 by FOX was a colossal failure, it might perhaps be time for the franchise to be sold its' rights BACK to rightful owners Marvel. I personally think that adding these characters back into the MCU would make for an awesome addition to the Avengers Infinity War. The other 3 are cool, mind you, BUT... imagine the mind of Reed Richards teaming with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. These 3 are some of the greatest minds of the MCU and when they team up with the Guardians, the Avengers, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and (fingers crossed) the Fantastic 4, well... what else needs to be said, but HOLY SHIT SNACKS ;)
That would be one hell of a team to defeat Thanos and save the galaxy from destruction.

From the previews, even I must say that it doesn't look bad. The DC studios are doing what they do best in putting their two top franchise players up against one another in a juggernaut battle for the ages. Will it be entertaining? Probably so, but... it is likely to be a one and done kind of movie, in my opinion. There doesn't seem to be very much hype for THIS movie, let alone their follow on movies that are scheduled over the next 4-5 years. I'm not sure if movies like Aquaman or Flash could stand toe to toe with a Thor or Captain Marvel franchise let alone Guardians Vol. 2 or Avengers Infinity War Part 1. Alas, DC will do their best to rival competitor Marvel as they bring out the big guns. In addition to the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel we have been shown Wonder Woman, General Zod being turned into Doomsday, and Lex Luther. We are likely to see possible cameos from Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg. I'm doubtful on an appearance from the Martian Manhunter or Green Lantern.

There are many more upcoming movies by both movie studios. Here is a pic of some of the upcoming movies. There may be some changes considering the flop of Fantastic 4 reboot by FOX.

DC movies not seen in this picture are Shazam and Green Lantern (reboot, NOT with Ryan Reynolds who is SOOOOO MUCH BETTER AS DEADPOOL!!!!)

Well, that about wraps it up for me. It'll be interesting to see the whole thing as it plays out on a cinema screen near you. Me, I plan to see most of these flicks at the Cinetopia where there is a 21 and over section. There are a few I will take the kids to see, like Civil War and Dr. Strange. But they sure are NOT going to see Suicide Squad or Batman v Superman. Well, maybe... I try to be a good dad, which is why I must give this warning about the most kick ass, violent, vulgar, sexual beast in the Marvel Comic Universe: DEADPOOL

As you may have heard from your friends or you may have read on the internet, Deadpool is rated R. I've seen this movie. I have children. I don't want them to see this until they are several years older, and that's okay... it's NOT FOR THEM. This movie was made with a R rating ON PURPOSE, so let's as adults enjoy something that was clearly made for US, NOT for kids. Remember parents, TRIX are for kids, NOT Deadpool. In agreement with the above pic, I would hate for FOX to ban future sequels to this kick ass flick because some dumb shit brought their kids and had to ruin it for everyone else.

This has been the one and only Quiet Mouse. Until next time and I'll see YOU at the movies.
